Walk a mile in my socks - a full-time student's perspective on compression socks

When most people hear "compression socks" the image that comes to mind is probably not a fashionable one. Historically, compression socks have come in limited colors and uncomfortable fabrics. Today, compression socks come in a wide range of styles, colors, patterns and fabrics giving everyone the opportunity to find complementary wardrobe staples that match their personality.

The reasons for wearing compression are just as varied as the options they come in. While many women wear compression garments daily for medical reasons, more and more women are discovering their rejuvenating effects for themselves. One such woman is Katie, in addition to being a full-time student majoring in English with a Communications minor, she is an ultrasound technologist, part-time intern, single mom and a Navy Veteran. Let's learn about this busy lady's experience wearing compression socks.

Q:  What do you do in your (limited) spare time?

A: I live near a large park where I like to take my son and dog to play, we all benefit from being outdoors. I pandemic purchased an indoor bike and I spend an hour on that a day, I don’t necessarily enjoy it, but my hospital shifts have decreased, and I’ve spent a lot more time at home sitting or standing.

Q: What is a typical day like for you?

A: Every day is different, but the week I wore my compression socks I was homeschooling my son, interning, cooking and completing other house work, walking my dog, biking, online classwork for myself, and taking my son to karate

Q: How much of your day to you spend sitting? Standing?

A: Much of my day is standing. The rest of my day is sitting in front of my computer for school and my virtual internship.

Q: Have you worn compression before?

A: I occasionally wear compression during shifts at the hospital where I work as an ultrasound technologist.

Q: How do your legs and feet feel after a typical work day (no compression)?

A: Tired and I have to put them up. I cannot wait to sit on the couch and rest them on some pillows. I even bought a bed a few years ago that can tilt the feet up, so I will sometimes sleep with my feet up to help revive them for the next day.

Q: How did your legs feel after wearing compression socks for a day?

A: I had never worn compression socks from the moment of waking up to going to bed and I was honestly shocked at how I felt. My legs weren’t heavy and tired, and felt less tired. I added 15 minutes to my cycling workout (usually I am staring at the clock hoping time will speed up and I can be done) and I didn’t think about putting my feet up once! It was a crazy difference.

Q:  What did you think of the socks overall?

A: They were super comfortable, I’m going to continue wearing them. Putting them on was not as easy as putting on crew socks in the morning, and I struggled with them at first. After watching a YouTube video I figured it out and I'm basically a pro. As for fashionable-ness they were very cute! I’m excited to wear them with leggings and boots.

The socks Katie wore are the Herringbone Rejuva Socks in Charcoal.
